Fair Isle Bird Observatory
Activity Holidays
Through the Northern Periphery
Programme, Fair Isle Bird Observatory have teamed up with a local
eco-tourism company and are now offering Activity Holidays to Fair Isle
for 2002:
Spring Migration Holiday:
18th 24th May
Island Insights Holiday: 29th June 6th July
Autumn Migration Holiday: 28th September 5th October
The
Spring and Autumn Migration holidays
are a perfect way to see the magic of migration on Fair Isle, with the
reassurance of a experienced guide to help with those tricky
identifications!
The
Island Insights holiday is a unique
holiday experience, combing, history, culture, crafts and wildlife. Spend
a week on Fair Isle learning all about island life (guided by Islanders)
and witnessing the work of the Bird Observatory first hand.

We are very pleased to report that Sir
Peter Maxwell Davies has kindly agreed to be Patron of Classic Fair Isle. He
hopes to visit Fair Isle for the premier performance next August.
To date 470 has so far been raised by the Isle, and we should hear by
December if we have been successful in securing a grant of 5000 for the
project.
Writing in the Fair Isle Times of 22nd September, Cara says that Garage
coffee for Classic Fair Isle has raised 31.83 this week!

Fair Isle School receives excellent
report
from HM Inspectors
In a report published early in September HM Inspectors gave the Fair
Isle Primary School a 'glowing' report with six indicators of quality
described as very good, 12 as good and just two as fair. No aspects
were reported as unsatisfactory.
Inspectors found a welcoming atmosphere with the pupils polite, friendly and
very well-behaved.
This report (as well as ones for other Shetland primary schools) is
available for download at the HM Inspectorate of Education page -

The year 2001 so
far has seen a disappointing and saddening turn of
events for the breeding seabirds on Fair Isle,
especially the
Arctic Terns.

Chiropodist gets the foot treatment!
|
|
 |
Chris Hamer on one of his regular visits -
like all travellers arriving at Fair Isle airstrip - steps into a
disinfectant footbath as a precaution against bringing foot and mouth disease to
the island. Supervising is airstrip fireman and island
postmistress/shopkeeper Fiona Mitchell. |
|
|
 |
Even the pilot,
Captain Eddie Watt - assisted by islander John Best - steps through the footbath as he gets out of
the Loganair Islander aircraft. |
