GETTING TO FAIR ISLE

Fair Isle can be reached from the Shetland mainland either by the island mailboat
Good Shepherd IV, or by 8-seater 'Islander' aircraft.

The Good Shepherd carries 12 passengers, the journey taking about two and a half hours.  During summer the ferry sails three times a week to Grutness at the south end of Shetland and once a fortnight makes a Thursday run to Lerwick

The 'plane leaves from Tingwall Airport - a 15 minute taxi ride to the west of Lerwick.  Visitors travelling by air to Shetland arrive at Sumburgh airport at the southern end of Shetland.  This means that, except on a Saturday in summer, they must travel to Tingwall for the onward connecting flight to Fair Isle.  On Saturdays in summer it is possible to fly from Sumburgh to Fair Isle.

During summer 2008, from 8th May to 28th September, Loganair will operate a direct scheduled air service - using an Islander aircraft - from Kirkwall to Fair Isle.

It is possible to arrive in Shetland by P&O ferry from Aberdeen or via Stromness in Orkney, or by air from various UK airports.  During the summer months there are also ferry links from Norway and Faeroe and an air service to Norway.

Private aircraft are welcome to use the Fair Isle airstrip, but care and experience is required due to the vagaries of the weather.  The high cliffs can produce turbulent winds and fog or low cloud is an ever present risk - especially during summer.

Since the building of the breakwater and new pier visiting yachtsmen can now find a sheltered berth in the North Haven.
