Safeguarding Our Heritage - the Fair Isle marine resource, a community proposal for its sustainable management

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

This Report has been generously sponsored by Kerr-McGee Oil (UK) plc.  The Isle and The National Trust for Scotland are happy to acknowledge their excellent relationship during exploratory drilling 20 miles off Fair Isle in 1997, even though it was only to be expected that we took different views on oil exploration.   In the event, no commercial oil was found.

Safeguarding Our Heritage is part-funded through the Scottish Office’s Rural Challenge scheme. Matching funding has been provided by the National Trust for Scotland. Considerable help, provision of data, comments and/or suggestions for improvements to the text were received from the Fair Isle Bird Observatory Trust, the National Trust for Scotland, the Joint Nature Conservation Committee and its Marine Nature Conservation Review, the British Oceanographic Data Centre, the Scottish Office Agriculture, Environment and Fisheries Department, Scottish Natural Heritage, the Fisheries Research Services of the Marine Laboratory, Aberdeen, the Shetland Fishermen’s Association, Shetland Amenity Trust, Shetland Islands Council Department of Education and Community (Museums and Archives Section), the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, Marine Conservation Society and the Fair Isle Meteorological Station at Field. We gratefully acknowledge all these contributions.

Safeguarding Our Heritage is a synthesis of texts and materials provided by the Fair Isle community and its partners, the Fair Isle Bird Observatory Trust and the National Trust for Scotland. I would particularly like to thank Emma Perring, Elizabeth Riddiford, Anne Sinclair, Neil and Pat Thomson, Stewart Thomson and Dave Wheeler, all island members of the FIMETI team, for the provision of texts and information on their specialist subjects; and the entire island community for its interest and support from the planning stage to the contribution of succinct and telling comments on, and improvements to, drafts of this document.

Illustrations were very kindly provided by Dave Wheeler (aerial photo of isle), James W Stout (traditional yoal construction at Kenaby), Paul Harvey (Minke Whale off Fair Isle), Paul Leonard (killer whale vignette) and the bairns of the Fair Isle Primary School (sketches of marine life).
