Vol.22 No. 4
30th January 1999
| All about us My name is Rachel Ross-Smith. I am 12 years old and my birthday
is on January 4th. I 'm 5 foot tall, I have long dark blond hair, blue I grey eyes and I
wear glasses. My hobbies are riding my bike and riding ponies or horses. I like football,
running, playing rounders, badminton and roller blading.
My pets are a pony called Zippy, 2 dogs called Teal
and Fudge, a cat called Sophie, a lizard called Spike and my brother has fish. We have a
croft at Lower Leogh. I have also got my own sheep called Polo. I would like to be a vet
when I'm older.
I have a brother called Lewis who is 10, a sister called
Vivian who is 8 and a mum and dad called Clare and Patrick. My mum works as one of the
school cooks and she is the school cleaner. Mum also does Fair Isle knitting and sometimes
does drawings for other people to buy. My dad makes stained glass windows and repairs
them.
I like animals, reading, shopping, school, dancing and
listening to music. I play the piano and the fiddle. I like pop, jazz, Shetland and that
kind of music. I like the bands Five, Steps, All Saints, B witched, Garbage, The Corrs,
Will Smith and Alanis Moriset. My favourite actor is Leonardo DiCaprio, I think he is
really cute and he is a great actor. My favourite colour is Blue.
My best subjects at school are P. E, music, art and German.
I don't like cruelty to animals, pollution, fishing, shooting and days when there's
nothing to do! I'm in primary 7 and after the summer I go to high school.
When we reach high school we have to go out to a boarding
school. We get to come home once a month and in the holidays. I moved to Fair Isle 6 years
ago. Fair Isle is 3 miles long and 11/2 miles wide. There is I shop on the island and
there is a Bird Observatory. There are 3 guest houses and 2 light houses but both are
automated. The school has 12 children all together.
I am the oldest child in the school. We have a`head teacher
called Ruth Stout and a part time teacher called Mary Wilson. We also get taught German by
Pat Wilson, music by Lise Sinclair and computer by Dave Wheeler.
There are about 70 people on the Isle. Lots of sea birds
here and rare birds come as well. Wild cats live here and there's lots of rabbits and
sheep. We can get very nice weather in the summer here but in the winter it can get very
stormy and the sea comes up and over the road. I like living in Fair Isle because there's
not many cars and everybody knows each other. You can play anywhere and cycle about.
Sometimes you can get a bit bored here because there's not many people my age living here.
I don't think I will live here when I'm older. |

Da week dats awa - that wasn't, & da week dats awa.
Yes I'll do da week dats awa only to get to Saturday and AH I'd
only scribbled a few notes up 'til Wednesday. So humble apologies to Lise and the promise
to do a full fortnight as penance.
Sat 16th - Still no plane from yesterday so George and Phil remained in Shetland. No
Shetland Times with the latest Reiter Council update. As saga's go this must be one of the
top 10. Cara and Scott head to the Schoolhouse to play and Robert helps Dad with the vat
at Utra, or is it the Utra vat ? We join forces for a meal at the Schoolhouse and Cara and
Scott stay the night Scott's first sleepover so he was very pleased with himself Ruth and
lain may have a different opinion.
Sun - Hey, a long lie and no children. Service is at the Kirk and 1 leave with the
bairns to help at Sunday school. We enjoy the drawing, cutting and gluing and the end
result is a banner for the chapel next week. Mum and Dad and Quoy come for lunch and
thankfully lain took charge of the lego, rebuilding Christmas presents overplayed with and
with bits missing.
Mon -The plane gets in - George and Phil home at last. Scott has a change of day for
nursery and joins the other 4. Now that Daniel from North Shirva has joined it's a busy 2
hours for Mary. In the afternoon the Fair Isle primary visits the Fair Isle Post Office.
They all manage to sort the 1st & 2nd class post I'd saved for them and date stamp it,
with only the occasional miss! Squeezing the clamp to mark the metal clips for the mail
bags proved a bit more difficult except for those who'd had their weetablx. Later at
Schoolton the FIMETI team and others go over their work to date and we hear about the
Northern Peripheries programme, discussing various thoughts and ideas.
Tues - The plane gets in and thankfully so does the milk and some fruit & veg. News
travels fast and a steady stream of folk come to the shop. Robert was working at LSB -he's
in the filling, plastering and painting team to which his boilersuit is testament. We join
in Clare's ( and Dolly Partons ! ) birthday celebrations and enjoy company, curry and
cake.
Wed - The boat gets away so on it's return we slip into the usual boat day routine of
sorting bread, papers, fish and lots more. Supplies include creme eggs - nothing to do
with Easter but an essential for any crofter whose sheep are due to lamb.
Thurs - Open after the boat day so we are kept going for the morning. Myself and Emma
spend time in the afternoon working towards our plans for a children's book having
researched how to present a manuscript, seeking advice and frequently reading and hearing
that failure is the norm. Robert joins us after another session at LSB and we enjoy a meal
at Nether Taft. 1 didn't make keep fit.
Fri - A wet and windy day. The plane gets in but no Dr Hunter - we'll all have to be
ill another day. Nursery for Scott but otherwise a quiet day.
Sat 23rd - A calm mild day. Tom and Hannah come across and all the bairns manage to
play out longer than they've been able to do all month. More play in the afternoon as a
gang of perrie one's take over the hall for a very noisy hour or so.
Sun - Windy but fine. A family service at the chapel so no Sunday school this week.
Burkle and Pat join us for lunch. The adults are seriously outnumbered but we win the day
once the bairns leave for Charlotte's 10th birthday party. Party goers were invited to
dress up as 'pop stars 'so bootlegs, dark glasses, gold shirts, wigs and much more
eventually turn 2 Stackhoull children into chart toppers.
Mon - No date stamping helpers from the school this Monday. Haggis is in
demand but those up on Bums were more organised and bought on Friday. If Robert had a
diamond ring I'm sure he would etch words of love for me on the bedroom window as Bums did
for Polly Stuart. ( And if he didn't I'd make him! )
Tues -The boat goes for the usual supplies. Scott to nursery and Robert
to LSB - 1 have peace and quiet and manage to write letters that should have been done a
while back. We go north for the boat and join in the usual inspection of all that comes
off the boat.
Wed - A cold but calm day. Daniel comes to play with Scott and they are
quickly joined outside by the other bairns visiting the shop. The ' Inge ' is launched,
the tablecloth sail goes up and we watch from the shop window as ' man overboard ' seems
to feature frequently . Our usual morning rush for fruit & veg is followed by a quiet
afternoon. Two boats were off managing to catch olick, piltock and apparently 1 cod.
Thurs - A nice day. Lots of small jobs done and one large job - Cara's
room is ' black bagged and there's a new regime in practice - if its on the floor its in
the bag ! More literary efforts with Emma whilst the bairns play. Norman arrives to take
bits off our boiler to check the LSB one with and also answer our own boiler questions.
He's in demand. Fair Isle needs a plumber.
Fri - Another fine day. Chas and Steve arrive off the plane for another
year at the Obs so we can't be that bad then. Radio Orkney broadcast a proposal to cut
Orkney Loganair inter island fares by half funded by the government's rural transport fund
if necessary - it will make up any deficit Loganair incurs if there aren't enough
passengers to cover their costs. Perhaps we should link up with Orkney for a better deal.
Da fortnight's awa.
Fiona
