Vol.22 No. 9
6th March 1999

We have had 4 days off school. Last Sunday it was my birthday and I was 9. I got a remote control car from mum and Patrick and from Rachel, Lewis, Vivian and Duncan I got a LEGO MOTOR I built a 4 wheel drive truck. My mums mum and dad gave me a fishing rod and my other granny and grandad gave me 2 books. Magnus and Jenny came for tea. Before tea we went up to the hall to race my car and Lewis's remote control car. My car does skids.
CALUM (9)

Today is my birthday I am 9 today and I am a bit annoyed that my birthday is on a school day. For my birthday I got a K'NEX motor, 2 K'NEX sets, a scraper art set, a young scientist set and an airfix set.
Magnus (9)

My bedroom was decorated 3 weeks ago. Chas and Steve came to help us and it is purple. First we painted it light purple but it turned out white but when the light was switched on it look pink. Then we painted it dark purple. We waited until the first coat of paint had dried then we put the dark purple on. When the dark purple was finish we put on a lighter purple and then it was finished BUTI! the painting was not all finished because we still had to paint the cupboard but we stopped painting and went for dinner. The next day Rachel came to help put the furniture back in my bedroom. Through the weekend holiday Alan, Chas, Steve and Rachel helped us paint the guest rooms. The front room is terracota and the other room is just boring old white. On Sunday it was my mums birthday and we went for tea at Taft Thank-you to Alan, Chas, Steve and Rachel.
Charlotte (I0)

We had 4 days off school. Ruth, lan, Daniel, Amy, Ruth's mum Barbara and Ruths sister Vicky came for tea. For tea we had lasagne and vegetables and for pudding we had a ginormous, chocolate cake! The next day Jenny and Magnus came to stay the night. Lewis and Magnus talked all night but I managed to get to sleep! The next morning they all got up at half past 7 and woke me and mum up but we went back to sleep. That day it was Kathy's birthday so we invited her and Charlotte up for tea. We also invited Clive, everybody from Barkland and Alan. We did ask Chaz and Steve down but they had to babysit at Stackhoul because Alan didn't want to babysit!! We had stir fry vegetables and spaghetti bolognaise. For pudding we had birthday cake. On Sunday it was Calum's Birthday so we went over to dads house and Jenny and Magnus came for tea. On Monday Eileen came over and we talked for 2 hours! That afternoon I went riding Zippy. On Tuesday we went back to school and it was Magnus's Birthday.
Rachel (12)

On our days off school it was Kathy's birthday. Alan, Kathy, Charlotte, Jenny, Magnus, Georgie and Clive came for Kathy's birthday. We had lasagne and for pudding we had a BIG chocolate cake. Alan gave me a poster of B*witched because me and Alan made a bet on the game 'four' in a row, if I won Alan would have to buy me a B*witched poster and if Alan won I would have to buy him a Jenny Macarthy poster. We got a new PC computer at school, I am typing my news up on it!! We did not have any games to play on it but Charlotte had lots of games so we are using them. I went to Charlotte's house to play, we played on her computer. My favourite game is called Fire and Ice.
Vivian (8)

At school we have got a new computer, but it is on loan from FIMETI. It is a PC, and our other computers are Apple Mac so we can play PC games on this one as long as they aren't CD Rom because the PC doesn't have a Rom drive. Yesterday we played a game called Dinosaur Discovery. It is quite hard. It is about an explorer who tries to find these dinosaurs eggs, incubate them and look after little baby dinosaur. But he 'tragically dies' and leaves us to read his diary and try to do the same as him without getting killed! If you are killed, you go straight back to the beginning. I really like it.
Jenny (10)

Last Friday Calum came to play. We built a Lego off the road buggy. It had big wheels and 2 little lasers on the front and a lifting door at the back that machine guns came out of. Also out of Lego we made a big boat with a turning cannon and a helicopter base. Hannah and daddy went to Holland because Steven and Marjolein are moving there. They were helping move all their stuff over to Holland.
Tom (7)

At German on Thursday we were learning to say names of breakfast foods. Here are a few of them. Orangeshaft - orange juice, Haferbrei - porridge, Brotchen - roll, Toast -toast, Brot - bread, Marmelade - jam, Orangenmarmelade - marmalade, Honig - honey, Tee -tea, Kaffe - coffee and Milch - milk.
Duncan (6)

Granny and Aunty Vicky came for a holiday to Fair isle. Last Friday they went home but mummy, Amy and I went with them to Shetland for the day. I had to go to the hospital. We went to the swimming pool for lunch and we met Sara, Peter, Karis and Jade who are my friends. We went to Harry's and I got a tecnic lego model and 2 knights on horses.
Daniel (5)

We had 4 days off school. on Friday morning Tom came to play and we played lots of of games. First we played animals then we went outside and played a game where Scott and Tom were monsters and I was a person. Tom stayed for lunch and then after lunch Lise came to pick him up. on Saturday Tom was going to come around and play again but he wasn't feeling well so he stayed at home. On Monday I went to play with Daniel and Amy and I also stayed for tea. The boat went that day. We were back to school on Tuesday.

Da Week Dat's Awa.

Saturday.
The day dawns with a house full of bairns due to mid term holidays and Jenny and Magnus's overnighter. An industrious afternoon of kitchen and Lego activities. Rachel concocting spiced oils, Lewis constructing the next pneumatic machine and Vivian and I catalogue shopping for flower seeds. The day culminates in celebrations with Kathy and not wishing to detract from all Kenny's hard work with the heating system yesterday, the ambient temperature went up by a degree or two with the arrival of the becandled cake! Happy Birthday Kathy. By bedtime the dreaded cold that is currently doing the rounds has firm hold of us all.

Sunday.
Drippy noses and hot heads encourages all four of us to cuddle up for the morning with hot chocolate and normal breakfast swiftly followed by a medicinal helping of Boston brownies and Children's BBC. By midday the brownies are having a good effect and we all feel brighter. The bairns go off to Burkle for the remainder of their break and to celebrate some more. This time it's Happy Birthday Calum. My desire to stay in the warm gives me the ideal opportunity to get on with the current jumper order and write up the canteen stock books, a monthly job which Triona and I do turn about. These tasks are enhanced considerably by watching the dramatic weather and associated skies and seas alternate between deep blue with high. flicked clouds and strong sunshine and sweeping snow showers with a lost horizon.

Monday.
Ist of March and in like a lamb. But Jimmy is not cajoled into thinking this is spring and with the boat due to go off for its annual commission tomorrow, decides to do the Grutness trip today. The afternoon plane brings Alexander Bennett and Angus Jack which provides the N.T. representation at this evenings quarterly Isle meeting. St David's Day draws beautifully to a close with an aurora and a clear, calm, moonlight night.

Tuesday.
Back to school and my week for cooking. Birthday cake for pudding to wish Magnus a Happy Birthday (with the other half for Calum). The Good Shepherd heads off to Lerwick for 'the week and by lunchtime the weather is wet and windy. Up to the hall after tea for sports club with Phil, a real hit with all the older primary children.

Wednesday.
Between the usual daily croft routine and being at the school with my cook's hat on then later with my cleaners apron on, I take some time to hang a few drawings, pictures and possessions around the Taft walls. This is a pastime which I really love and take ages over (the last pictures went up in the Chalet the week before we moved out). For all I would never have chosen orange as a sponged colour for the sitting room walls, I am finding it a warm and cheery colour to live with. This makes me think about a feature I heard on the radio on Sunday which was looking at the symbolic nature of pilgrimage as a venture into new domains from which you learn and grow. So, a little of what you don't know . . . . The plane which didn't make it in this morning, gale F 8/9, gets in this afternoon and Alexander and Angus depart.

Thursday.
Bright again. Roast chicken and roast veggies mean an earlier than usual start at the canteen. The clean plates after that and lemon meringue pie demonstrates a well enjoyed menu with the only complaint being "Not enough fluffy stuff on top"! I think they meant the pud not the chicken. Meet the bairns from school, bit of playing, croft round then up to school for cleaning and homework. Out to Schoolhouse for the evening, and some of Ruth's scrummy profiteroles with coffee sauce which I can't make so doubly enjoy.

Friday.
A beautiful day again, still and blue. While I am washing up after dinners there is a distinct smell of grass wafting in on the air through the open window. Maybe spring did arrive this week. Fiona and Nick are in Edinburgh today presenting the two documents, 'Managing The Sea For Birds' and 'Safeguarding Our Heritage' to Lord Sewel. amongst others, but perhaps we will hear more of that next week. With a meeting at Kenaby in less than an hour to discuss the Shetland College Textile and Design correspondence course that a handful of us are taking I'd better get the file out and do more than a little cramming to get back into that mood.
