Da Fishing Hands o' Fair Isle

This chart indicates all the known fishing 'hands' around the shore of Fair Isle.

For many years the locations of these 'hands' has been passed from one generation to the next by word of mouth.  In 1968 Jerry Eunson began the work of collating much of this knowledge.  By using computers, GIS and - with the invaluable assistance of the local fishermen - it has now been possible to expand this earlier work and accurately plot the position of the 'hands'.

Within the next few months it is intended to produce a booklet describing in more detail the fishing grounds around the island and the 'hands' with which they are located.

Those involved in this work - in no particular order - are Emma Perring, Stewart Thomson, George Stout, Brian Wilson, Dave Wheeler.

The base map of Fair Isle used above  - showing all the local place names - is available from Stackhoull Stores and the Fair Isle Bird Observatory.

The image of the 'hands' was prepared for the web from a 23-layer Map Maker Pro (http://www.mapmaker.com) chart.
