Island News & updates 2000

OCTOBER

Prospective Lib-Dem

Friday 6th

Prospective Liberal Democrat member for
Orkney and Shetland at Westminster, Alastair Carmichael, fortunately (unfortunately?) chose to visit Fair Isle on the day we went to the Hill.

Borrowing a set of oilskins he gave a hand in sorting out the hill lambs.  An ideal way to meet the crofters and learn something of the problems of stock-rearing on an isolated island.  He was given time off to enjoy the brilliant weather, visit others on the isle and learn something of isle living.

SEPTEMBER

  • (The Shetland Times, Friday 22nd Sept 2000)

Last weekend (30 Sep/1 Oct) Claire won the under 15 year-old girls 4000 metres Scottish Road Race Championships at Reuken Glen, finishing more than 100 metres ahead of her nearest rival.

Her coach, Andrew Winnie, added: "Claire would like to dedicate her championship win to residents of Fair Isle whose financial assistance was greatly appreciated."

  • 21st
Fair Isle's Community Hall was the venue for a very successful " Soire " last Saturday evening. A cheese and wine buffet was enjoyed at the candlelit tables, interspersing the varied music, songs and recitations performed by local and visiting celebrities.

The money raised, 180, launches the big fund-raising drive to commission an item of classical music by our local well known composer, Alastair Stout. The piece will be name after Fair Isle and the world premire will be on the isle in 2002.

FAIR ISLE BIRD OBSERVATORY PRESS RELEASE:

Through their SNH funded Ranger Service, Fair Isle Bird Observatory are planning a number of structured activity weeks during the summer months. In conjunction with the EU l Norwegian Government funded Northern Periphery Programme (NPP), Fair Isle Bird Observatory and the local community are providing unique, informative, holidays on Britains most remote inhabited island.

For the NPP, FIBO and the local community have teamed up with small communities in northern Norway and Swedish Lapland, to develop a sustainable resource management programme. In layman's terms this means using the environment in a sustainable, non-damaging way. The islanders are proud of their heritage and our activity weeks will demonstrate how communities can live in harmony with their rich environment.

Holidays planned for this season include:

Fair Isle and Seabirds week: from 1st July to 7thJuly
Fair Isle Meteorology week: Dates to be arranged

The Seabirds week will include talks and slide-shows to learn about the ecology and lifecycles of all of Fair Isle's breeding seabirds and hands-on experience of searching for tern and skua chicks, storm petrel and puffin ringing.

Learning about life on the isle, both past and present, will also play an important role in this activity week. Craft demonstrations on spinning, knitting, stained glass, straw chair making and boat making will be carried out by members of the local community. A walk around the isle Museum and a visit to a local croft to learn about the history of fishing and the importance of the marine environment, will give an insight into the past and present on the isle. Guided walks on archaeology, flowers, crofting and weather watching will add further variety and interest to the week.

The `Fair Isle and Seabirds' activity week costs only 60 per person (not including travel and accommodation).

  • Fair Isle publication caters for lovers of islands
The first issue of the Scottish islands Explorer, published by Philip Welch, is now on sale.

While the newsletter is directed towards people who like visiting islands it is also likely to be of interest to those who actually live on the Scottish Islands.

The first issue contains articles on the folklore of Hoy, Orkney; a close encounter with a minke whale and an article about the Mull potter Charlotte Mellis.  Of interest to Shetlanders is a history of Up-Helly-A' and how it has changed over the years.

A year's subscription to the newsletter costs 47.

  • Pontoon is a winner
The Fair Isle Committee and Community Association, one of the winners of the 1999 Crown Estate Scottish Coastal Community Projects Scheme, is to receive a grant of 5000 for its plans to provide a floating pontoon at North Haven to assist the hundreds of cruise ship visitors who visit the island each year.

Last year 21such visits by ships were planned but in the end only 16 landed visitors due to poor weather conditions.

The project caught the judges' eye for being innovative, practical and one that would bring a clear benefit to both visitors and community alike.
