Just arrived back to the nest at the start of the breeding season.
The albatross showed no anxiety, just looked on inquisitively, as I reached under her for the chick and accepted it back just as unconcernedly when we returned it!

Tagging elephant seal pups before they head off to sea. At this point, 1964, the tagging of seals was only just beginning. Seal biologist Bill Vaughn is putting the tag into the 'armpit' of the flipper - not the best of places for reading at a later date.
A big one, weighing in at about 3 tonnes and some 3 metres in length, he is rearing up to a height of seven or eight feet. Luckily he's not that fast across the ground.
An infrequent visitor, but one to be watched as as they are meat-eaters - but they usually chose penguins as a meal
